Ask Me Anything - The Truth About “Saggy Butt Syndrome”, Why Collagen Powders Are Ineffective, and How to Hydrate Skin That Feels Dry as a Bone

Each month we pose questions from the Sun Coast Community to our resident health and beauty expert, Dr. Mark Rosenberg.

In this November edition of 'Ask Me Anything', Dr. Rosenberg reveals:

Why the infamous celebrity weight loss aid causes a gaunt looking face and a saggy butt...

Why most collagen powders often fail to smooth out wrinkles...

And the real reason your skin stays dry as a bone despite applying lotion multiple times a day.

Let's dive in.

Question 1: "I've heard that the celebrity weight loss aids make your face and butt look saggy. Why is this?"

Lots of people have lost weight with them.

But as I often say on this topic: there's no such thing as a free lunch.

The weight lost isn’t ONLY from reduced stores of fat.

It also comes from muscles and bone mass.

This includes muscle and bone mass in your face and butt.

Your facial muscles and the fat pads beneath your skin provide the scaffolding that keeps your face looking full and youthful.

Less muscle and bone mass means the skin loses its structure.

The result?

A gaunt looking face and a saggy butt.

This is why I recommend to all my patients they commit to sensible diet changes and daily walks instead.

I also recommend a pre-meal ritual.

It’s a ritual that activates an enzyme which tells your body to convert more of the carbs and sugars you eat into energy, rather than fat.

This way you can lose weight without losing bone and muscle mass, providing a slimmer yet more toned and attractive body.

Question 2: "I’ve heard that applying exfoliating creams at night to get rid of dead skin cells can age my skin faster. Is this true?"

Exfoliating creams are made from tiny granules that physically scrub away dead skin cells. But their ingredients can also be very harsh to your skin.

There are two ingredients, in particular, to watch out for: alpha hydroxy acid (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acid (BHAs).

While it’s true, these acids do remove dead skin and improve skin texture, applying them night after night can damage your skin in three ways:

  1. Increased dryness: Applying them too often can strip your skin barrier of its natural oils, leaving it feeling dry and irritated in the morning.

  2. Increased irritability: With a thinner skin barrier, your skin may become more sensitive to other skincare products and airborne toxins.

  3. Accelerated aging: When the skin barrier is weak, it becomes more prone to damage and inflammation, both of which cause premature aging

My advice: If you must apply a cream at night that contains harsh exfoliating ingredients, only use it 1 or 2 times a week.

On the other nights opt for a more gentle, nourishing cream that supports your skin's natural repair process without causing irritation.

You can find exactly which cream I recommend… and how it helps promote collagen production and hydration too… in this video:

Question 3: "I've been taking an expensive collagen powder for months, but my skin still looks wrinkled and saggy. Is it because I'm taking the wrong type of collagen?"

There are all sorts of collagen powders containing many types of collagen, like bovine, marine, and chicken.

The idea is that if you consume enough collagen, some of it will find its way to your skin cells.

But this is based on flawed science.

When you swallow collagen powder, your digestive system breaks it down into basic amino acids.

These amino acids then travel through your bloodstream and spread around your body.

Your skin cells may get some, but not enough to make a visible difference.

Instead, what you need to do is speed up what I call your "Skin Metabolism."

This is your skin's ability to make collagen on its own inside your skin cells.

Thankfully, the lab team and I found a way to speed up your "Skin Metabolism" 65% and restore four decades of lost collagen.
