If your skin turns a rosy red in winter, the sudden shift from warm air inside to cold, dry air outside is likely to blame. This happens because your skin thinks it’s suffocating in the cold air.
Your skin then goes into self defense mode. And sends blood rushing to your skin’s surface to warm it up.
Hence the red cheeks.
But this rush of blood has its downsides too:
- Elevated blood pressure: Rushing blood to the surface can cause blood vessels to constrict, raising blood pressure.
- Heart Strain: The heart has to work harder to pump blood through constricted vessels, which can risk dizzy spells and feeling light headed.
So the next time your cheeks go red, try giving them a quick rub to increase circulation and warm them up yourself. This will then help calm your blood pressure down too.
Here are three more ways to keep your skin healthy and happy in the colder weather:
While Omega-3s are an important nutrient all year-round, they’re particularly beneficial for your skin during winter.
This is because Omega-3s offer an excellent line of defense against dry, cracked skin. They help to strengthen cell membranes and provide a better barrier against cold air. This barrier also helps your skin to retain water, and maintain a softer, more youthful look.
You can find Omega-3s in tasty foods such as:
- Almonds, avocado, walnuts, chia, flaxseed
- Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and herring
Of course, another great option is to take an Omega-3 supplement. But you need to ensure the Omega-3 hasn’t been extracted from fish found in polluted waters that contain heavy metals, or fish farms that use a lot of antibiotics.
Sun Coast Science’s OmegaVive is formulated from the fish oil of anchovies found in the pristine waters of Peru. We’ve also used state-of-the-art formulation techniques to ensure the Omega-3s are ultra pure and ultra potent.
Rubbing on sunscreen during the scorching summer months is a given. But did you know that up to 90% of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate through the clouds and reach your skin in winter as well?
While the damage may be less obvious than sunburn, exposure to UV damage at any time during the year can age your skin. This is because UV rays reduce collagen and elastin levels, resulting in faster formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots.
For this reason, wearing sunscreen is essential all year-round to protect your skin from aging UV rays.
Visible signs of aging also result from exposure to environmental factors.
This includes:
- Toxins you breathe in which can release free radicals that drain your collagen levels, and wreck your skin’s firmness and elasticity.
- Aging ingredients found in beauty products and household sprays, like parabens, PEGs, fragrances, and dyes. These ingredients can all cause stress to your skin and health.
Exposure to these airborne toxins is unavoidable. But what you can do to protect your skin’s health is to nourish it from the inside.
This includes nourishing your gut so it can better absorb key skin health nutrients, like vitamin C, collagen, and vitamin A; flooding your skin with moisture with hyaluronic acid; and topping up your elastin levels for snappier, bouncier looking skin.
Sun Coast Sciences has a full range of world class supplements for helping in each of these areas:
